In this project, I explored the intersection of traditional and contemporary art styles to bring to life a captivating fox demon with nine tails, set against a mesmerizing garden backdrop. This piece allowed me to blend several artistic influences, from the meticulous details of Chinese gongbi painting to the vibrant, surreal elements of pop surrealism and retrofuturism. Here’s a glimpse into the inspiration, process, and the journey to transform this artwork into a phone case that people can carry and cherish.
1. Inspiration: Traditional Myth Meets Modern Aesthetic
The nine-tailed fox demon, or “Huli Jing” in Chinese folklore, is often depicted as a beautiful and seductive figure with a mysterious and sometimes dangerous charm. Drawing from Chinese mythology, I envisioned the fox demon as a creature of beauty seamlessly blending into an ancient yet otherworldly garden filled with vibrant flowers and timeless architecture.
While her appearance draws from folklore, the surroundings and mood were inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e prints, known for their bold lines, dramatic colors, and storytelling. Adding a touch of dystopian and retrofuturistic pop surrealism gave the artwork a mysterious vibe, creating an image that feels like it has a story to tell.

2. Combining Styles: Gongbi Painting, Ukiyo-e, and Pop Surrealism
For the visual style, I merged several art forms:
- Gongbi Chinese Painting: This style’s meticulous lines allowed me to bring out the character’s elegance and details in her attire and expression, adding realism to her mystical appearance.
- Ukiyo-e: The vibrant reds, lush greens, and glowing oranges, along with layered colors, lend a sense of depth and movement to the scene, while ukiyo-e’s traditional elements enhance the fox demon’s enigmatic charm.
- Pop Surrealism and Retrofuturism: Pop surrealism and retrofuturism add modern fantasy and intrigue, giving the artwork a storybook quality that feels both ancient and ahead of its time.
3. Crafting the Character: A Fox Demon with Enchanting Eyes
The fox demon herself is the heart of this piece. I wanted her expression to reflect her dual nature—innocent yet sly, beautiful yet dangerous. Her nine flowing tails, decorated with delicate flowers, are painted to blend seamlessly with the garden, emphasizing her connection to the supernatural world.
Her attire showcases ornamental floral patterns, grounding her character in traditional Chinese folklore while also giving her a slightly modern twist. Her elegance, with soft shading and vibrant tones, makes her appear as if she could step right out of the frame, embodying the mystical allure of a Huli Jing.
4. Creating the Setting: An Enchanted Garden with Mystical Elements
For the background, I imagined a serene, magical garden that contrasts with the fox demon’s charm. Using bold lines and flowing forms from gongbi and ukiyo-e techniques, I created a landscape that feels alive, with flowers and leaves swaying around her, adding a harmonious yet eerie quality.
- The Moon: A large, blood-red moon glows above, casting a light over the scene and symbolizing the fox demon’s otherworldly presence. It’s a nod to retrofuturism, adding a touch of mystery and grandeur.
- Floral and Architectural Details: Ancient pavilions and intricate floral motifs enhance the timeless feel, embodying the beauty and danger often associated with the fox demon’s world.

5. Bringing the Artwork to Life as a Phone Case
The final step was to transform this artwork into a phone case design. This meant balancing intricate details and vibrant colors to fit seamlessly onto the smaller canvas of a phone case without losing the depth and story of the original piece.
To make it work as a phone case:
- Adjusting Composition: The fox demon remains the focal point, with her expression and flowing tails front and center, while the bold colors of the flowers and the red moon wrap around the edges, making the case feel immersive from every angle.
- High-Resolution Detailing: To ensure that the artwork’s fine details—the delicate floral patterns on her dress, the texture of her tails, and the depth in her expression—are preserved, I worked on high-resolution adjustments to ensure clarity and color vibrancy in the final print.
- Choosing the Perfect Finish: A glossy, high-definition finish was selected to make the colors pop, while a protective, durable material ensures the design remains intact even with everyday use.

6. The Result: A Piece of Art to Carry Everywhere
With this transformation, the nine-tailed fox demon artwork became more than just a painting—it became a functional, artistic accessory. As a phone case, it’s not just protective; it’s a statement piece, carrying the allure, mystery, and elegance of a mythological world wherever you go.
Final Thoughts
Through this project, I aimed to create a phone case that’s both beautiful and meaningful, allowing people to carry a piece of art that merges ancient folklore with modern design. Each time you pick up the case, it’s a reminder of the enchanting world of the Huli Jing, a world filled with beauty, mystery, and complex stories.
Thank you for following along on this creative journey! I hope this phone case design brings the allure of the fox demon to life for everyone who holds it.
